BABY KILDEER RESCUE

I was working in the yard today, and there was an adult kildeer nearby, which isn't unusual. After a while though, I noticed it was acting a little strange. Call me crazy, but it was almost like it was doing the Lassie thing - trying to tell someone that Timmy is stuck in the well.  So I went over to where it was (it backed up a few feet then to keep a safe distance from me), and under the drainage grate in the street was a baby kildeer.










It was at the deep end -- about 4 feet -- but after about an hour of trying to scoot it to the shallow end with a stick, and several failed attempts to reach around the grate to get him, I finally got him out.  THEN the mother started doing her fake broken wing decoy dance, and the baby and parents ran off down the street. The baby looks a little rough (I don't know how long it had been down there), but it looks like he's going to be alright.
