Why do all the movies on this site require QuickTime 7 to view them?

All video on the web has to be compressed.  Otherwise it would be too large to download.  The problem with compressing video is that the image quality suffers the more you compress it, so you're always looking for the best balancing act between a small file size and good video quality.  There are hundreds of codecs (codec stands for compression/decompression) for video, but the best one I've found is one called H.264, which is only available through QuickTime 7.  It provides the best video quality at the smallest file size, which makes loading the video faster for you.

Problems downloading QuickTime 7?

If you're getting a white QuickTime screen where the video should be playing, or you've tried downloading QuickTime 7 but it never seems to work, here's what I think is happening:  You have an old version of QuickTime on your computer.  When you open one of my video pages, your old version of QuickTime opens to try to play it (this happens invisibly in the background, you wouldn't know it was happening).  Then when you click the link to download QuickTime 7, during your download your computer has a conflict between the new QT7 you're downloading and the old QT that's currently open (without you knowing it).

So here's the solution:  Close my website, and go to www.apple.com.  Click on the QuickTime tab at the top, and follow the directions for downloading QT7.  Once you've downloaded and installed it, try my website again.  The videos should play now, and if they don't, email me at the address at the top of the page and I'll help you figure out what the problem is.
