Pace turned out to be a very smart and very mischievous dog.  Once he got all his strength back (he was very weak from being homeless), he turned into an excellent jumper, and soon learned how he could escape from his yard.
Something moved at the bottom of the pool --
something that Pace had never seen before.

He inched closer and closer to the edge of the pool and...
well I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself.
First I should tell you about Pace.

Pace was found on the street when he was about one year old.  For a person, that would be like being on the street when you were seven years old.  His left ear was missing…no one’s been able to figure out why.

The couple who found him put flyers up and an advertisement in the newspaper, but nobody ever claimed him.  So the couple became his permanent guardians.  They named him Pace because he was so restless he would never stay in one place for very long -- he’d pace all around the house.
