BOX TURTLE EATING STRAWBERRIES

This is Fen, the wild box turtle that lives in our yard.  We grow strawberries for her to eat, but when they're not producing any fruit we'll sometimes put some store-bought strawberries out for her.  Apparently Fen was hungry on this day because she came out of the home I made for her in a hurry.  I love the wedge-shaped bite marks she puts in the strawberries (you can really see it about halfway through the video).  At the end of the video she either gets annoyed with the flies that are buzzing her, or with me for watching her eat, and she snatches up one last strawberry and takes it back to her home.  Right after shooting this video I cut off the top flap of the entrance to her house because it looked like she had trouble getting in; she never used the house again -- I guess she preferred a snug fit.  There's another video of Fen HERE, and a video of her mother excavating the nest where she hatched HERE.

Lecture Time: NEVER take a wild turtle out of the wild for a pet.  Not only is it illegal, it's also cruel.  We let Fen come in and out of our yard as she pleases, and we'll go months without seeing her.  If you see a turtle in the middle of the road, the best thing to do is move it to the side of the road in the direction it was heading.
