The back of our yard, and our neighbor's, has a retaining wall made out of railroad ties.  A few times over the years I've seen termites pouring out of them, and last week was one of those times.  These termites with wings are called swarmers, and they're leaving their colony to find mates and start new colonies.  Sometimes birds sit on the railroad ties and eat the termites as they come out -- it looks like a person drinking from a water fountain.  Swarmers shed their wings once they've "landed", and fortunately for homeowners not many of them survive.  I wonder if our toads will start looking fatter now.
