GULF FRITILLARY CATERPILLAR MOLTING

The second part of this video freaked me out.  I recorded this Gulf Fritillary caterpillar molting, or shedding its skin, which it does several times during its life.  This was the first time I had ever recorded one though (other than the final molt when it becomes a chrysalis).  In the first part of this video you'll see the old skin get pushed down to the bottom of the caterpillar.  This was exactly what I expected.
But then, you'll see that where the black spikes were, small yellowish-green spikes quickly sprout up in their place, then turn black.  The new spikes growing and changing color took only about 45 minutes to happen.  This was not what I expected.
